Dr Farooq Sattar of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has said that the elections for the post of mayor and deputy mayor are being delayed deliberately.
Dr Farooq Sattar, speaking at a press conference on Sunday, said that the provincial minister for local government was interfering in the municipal affairs. “The local government seems to exist only on papers but not in practice,” Sattar said. The MQM leader also criticised the provincial government for not transferring powers to the grass-root level and not announcing the election schedule for the posts of mayor and deputy mayors. He announced a protest against the delay in election schedule for the position of mayor and deputy mayor after which the Election Commission of Pakistan issued a notification regarding the oath-taking of the newly-elected representatives. The ECP also blamed the Sindh government for the delay in announcing the election schedule.
