Altaf didn’t order Imran Farooq’s killing, suspected killer tells court

Khalid Shamim, the key suspect in the Imran Farooq murder case, on Thursday confessed to killing the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader, “on the instructions of Muhammad Anwar and not (party chief) Altaf Hussain”.

Shamim along with other suspect Mohsin Ali made his confessional statement before a local court under Article-164. However, the third suspect Moazzam Ali is still not willing to make his confessional statement.

Shamim, who was the first record his statement, said that he had links with the MQM and that he had received orders for killing Imran Farooq from MQM leader Muhammad Anwar in London. “Then I passed on the order to others,” he added in his four-hour-long testimony.

When Magistrate Captain (r) Shoaib asked Shamim if he was giving this statement under pressure, he replied in negative.

Instead of being typed, Shamim’s statement was hand written and then read out to him before being signed along with his thumb impression.

Afterwards, the second accused Mohsin Ali, while recording his statement, confessed that he had held Imran Farooq from behind while one Kashif Kamran, who is unseen so far, stabbed him to death.

After the two suspects had their statements recorded, they were sent on 14-day judicial remand to Adiala Jail. Earlier, they were brought to the court under tight security by the paramilitary Rangers. Public entry was barred during the hearing.

Top MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq had been murdered on September 16, 2010 near his residence in London where he had been living in a self-imposed exile.
