Climate change is one of the most pressing concerns facing today’s society. It is not surprising that in recent years the issue of human activity induced climate change has drawn more attention than before. As we know, human greenhouse gas emissions warm the planet by increasing the abundance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, thus increasing the greenhouse effect. Solar activity also warms or cools the planet by increasing or decreasing the amount of radiation reaching the earth’s atmosphere and surface. Most climate scientists agree that the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the greenhouse effect.
The Intergovernmental Panels on Climate Change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change have identified climate change as the greatest threat of the century and reported that the earth’s average temperature has risen by 0.740 C. Furthermore, the present atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide is 385 ppm (parts per million) far more than at any time in the last 650,000 years resulting in climate change or global warming. Both natural and human causes of climate change including the earth’s orbital changes. But still they haven’t taken any positive or serious steps to reduce the growing climate change. Moreover, they only have promised to decrease it.
Strategies for climate change adaptation through a multi-dimensional and multi-sectorial approach have become imperative as a result of inequalities between the developed and the developing nations in terms of limited capital resources and expertise. Therefore, they are not able to drastically reduce the rise in atmospheric temperature, hence the consequences abound, especially in the developing countries like Nigeria. There is a need to take serious steps in order to demote growing climate change, because it is not only effecting agriculture, crops, people and economy but also effecting our daily routine as well. Precautions must be taken as soon as possible so that in future we can save our world.
