The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Tuesday issued notices to Sindh’s additional attorney general and prosecutor general to file comments on a petition filed by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Waseem Akhter for quashing of FIRs registered against him for allegedly making statements against the national interest.
Waseem Akhter, Karachi’s nominated mayor, approached the SHC for the cancellation of FIRs against him for allegedly speaking against the interest of the country and inciting people to violence.
The Waseem’s counsel stated that the allegations labeled against his clients were baseless, therefore, all the cases registered against him should be annulled. The court issued notices to Sindh’s additional attorney general, deputy attorney general and prosecutor general to make sure the submission of their respective comments on 11th of January. Earlier, the police produced challan in ATC in which the accused was declared as absconder under section 512 of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Waseem Akhter, who also served as advisor to the Sindh home minister, was booked by police for violating Telegraph Act and spreading anarchy. According to the FIR, Akhter incited public for violence and harmed national interest through his remarks in talk show of private news channel. Besides, the wedding of Waseem’s daughter was also around the corner and he could be arrested in the above-said cases, his counsel told the media.
