Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervaiz Rashid on Tuesday informed the National Assembly that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has been making efforts to stop indecent advertisements.
Advertisements that went against the country’s norms and values were being tackled under the relevant laws.
He was replying to a Calling Attention Notice raised by Muhammad Jamal-ud-Din regarding indecent advertisements being shown on TV channels despite the enforcement of the Indecent Advertisement Prohibition Act, 1963. He said that PEMRA has not only issued notices and warnings to TV channels for airing such advertisements but also imposed fines.
PEMRA always takes action against TV channels that violate set rules under the laws, he added.
“The honourable member drew attention towards an important issue and we are also concerned as TV programmes including news, dramas, etc are being watched jointly at homes,” he said.
The minister said that fine of Rs 1 million each was imposed on Jalwa TV and All Satellite for violating rules. Although PEMRA imposed the fine, the channels got stay orders from courts, he said.
He said that he has a long list of TV channels, which were fined and issued warnings in this regard.
