Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PM&DC) has cancelled the Gastroenterology eligibility certificate of a senior doctor of Shifa International Hospital Islamabad for not meeting the criteria.

According to the notification, the certificate was previously issued to Dr. Nasir Khokhar who was working as the head of Gastroenterology department of a big hospital of the country, in gross violation of PM&DC Teaching Regulations.

Talking to Online, Registrar PM&DC Brig (R) Hafizuddin Ahmed Siddiqui said the above doctor was not eligible to be a Professor of Gastroenterology as his certificate has been withdrawn by the department. The certificate was issued by the former registrar PM&DC Dr. Nadeem Akabar in violation of rules.

Former registrar is facing corruption cases in FIA, NAB and other departments, he informed.

The documents of PM&DC available to Online stated that Dr. Nasir Khokhar only has his degrees of MBBS, internal medicine and tropical medicine, and he was only eligible to practice as per his qualification. But the doctor had given a list of nine degrees and diplomas on his letter head which are illegitimate.

When contacted a well known doctor of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) Dr. Waseem Khawaja said the head of department of any hospital should be qualified and specialized in the concerned field. The PM&DC should clear the rules in this regard, he added.

He, however, said any MBBS doctor could make treatments to any patient.

Dr Nasir Khokhar said the above certificate was issued without listening to him, saying that he had lodged an appeal with the PM&DC to review this decision. He informed that he had a vast experience in the field.

He, however, admitted that he had received warning notices from PM&DC for mistreatment of a patient and was also facing several cases in courts in this regard.

  1. Is he the only 'unqualified' doctor in the country ? There could be thousands more including Dr Rehman Malik.
