Ansar Burney Trust International chairman and former minister for human rights Ansar Burney expressed grave concerns over the reports of missing 189 Pakistanis from Indian jails and urged to the government to raise the issue with Indian authorities.
Ansar Burney said on Sunday that Pakistan and India on January 1st exchanged lists of their nationals in jails (including civil prisoners and fishermen) through diplomatic channels simultaneously in New Delhi and Islamabad consistent with the provisions of the agreement on consular access between the two countries. The lists are exchanged twice each year on January 1st and July 1st.
He said the Indian list showed that there were 271 Pakistani prisoners, including 17 fishermen in India, while the Pakistani list stated that there were 460 prisoners including 113 fishermen in Indian jails.
Ansar Burney Trust urged upon Pakistan’s ministry of foreign affairs and ministry of interior to raise this important humanitarian matter with the Indian Authorities in India without any delay.
