The Presidential Ordinance regarding making Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) a corporation has been rejected as a motion against the measure tabled by opposition parties in the Senate was approved with majority.

On Thursday, in a session of the Upper House of Parliament, 51 parliamentarians of the opposition parties tabled a joint resolution about rejecting the Presidential Ordinance of making PIA a corporation. The Senate chairman sought opinion of the house regarding the matter. Parliamentarians of all opposition parties passed the resolution. The chairman also approved the resolution.

On this occasion, Leader of the House in Senate Raja Zafarul-Haq said that the objective of the Presidential Ordinance was not to privatise the national air line or sack any employees but to stabilise the organization and to free it from the grip of bureaucracy.

“If any parliamentarian or party has any concern about PIA’s corporatisation, the issue can be solved through negotiations,” Raja added and maintained that decisions made in haste would create horrible consequences.

The Senate chairman said that the Senate Secretariat had already been informed about the proposed resolution. “All proceedings have been conducted as per law,” the Senate chairman said.

Senator Mushadaullah Khan said that there would be no use of approval of resolution as they had already constituted a committee to settle the matters of PIA and now this committee would be useless.

“The approval of the resolution could get temporary praise, but the problems of PIA cannot be resolved,” he said.
