A citizen filed a review petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking reserved seat for labourers in the upper as well as in the lower house.

The review petition was filed against the decision of a division bench comprising Justice Noorul Haq N Qureshi and Justice Aamir Farooq.

Earlier, the said division bench in its order maintained that to reserve such seats, parliament had to amend the constitution which was only prerogative of the parliament, court had no jurisdiction in this regard, the bench added.

The petitioner, Manzoor Ahmed Bhatti came forward and filed a review petition stating that the court has jurisdiction to direct the government if the government did not entertain any application.

“I have submitted an application before the federal government to reserve such seats as reserved in the union councils for the workers but no response has been received,” Bhatti maintained.

Bhatti took the plea that the poor cannot contest the elections and ultimately lose the opportunity to represent their community which was against the norms of their fundamental rights.
