An often asked question is, why did a very large segment among the lawyers suddenly turned turtle after leading the struggle for the restoration of independent judiciary? The answer, as reported in some sections of the press, is: “Many leading lawyers who were in the forefront of the 2007 Lawyers’ Movement gradually distanced themselves from the former chief justice as his tenure came to an end.”
Why is our press so afraid of calling a spade a spade? Is it a secret that this shift came about after Benazir’s deal with Musharraf when she promised to support him in his re-election as president in return for becoming prime minister for a third time. She even taunted Iftikhar Chaudhry that he should form his own political party, forgetting the promise of hoisting the national flag at his residence.
