Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Wednesday agreed that no compromise will be made over Rangers-led operation against criminals and terrorists in Karachi as it will bring peace in the city, official sources said.

The Sindh Chief Minister called on the premier at PM House on latter’s invitation to discuss issues related to law and order and role of Rangers in Sindh province.

Sources said the PM assured Qaim that Sindh government’s reservations over security issues will be addressed.

Nawaz and CM discussed the overall security situation in Sindh.

The Centre and Provincial leadership vowed to continue dialogue to resolve controversial issues. They also decided to work jointly to restore peace in the port city.

Sources said, the meeting was held in a pleasant atmosphere, where the Premier heard CM Sindh’s reservations with open heart.

It was decided that Karachi operation is in the interest of all and it would continue in full swing, sources said.

Qaim Ali Shah also raised issue of Centre’s interference in provincial matters, saying that it was against provincial autonomy.

Meddling in provincial matters should come to end, Qaim demanded.

The two leaders also discussed Rangers special powers in Sindh. The provincial leadership also demanded Rs9 billion as part of expenses of Karachi operation.

Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, as well as provincial ministers Murad Ali Shah and Sohail Anwar Siyyal were also in attendance at the meeting.

Earlier, the prime Minster had invited Qaim “most probably” in an attempt to defuse growing tensions between the centre and the province over special powers for Rangers in Karachi.

Nawaz Sharif, during a visit to Karachi on Monday, was expected to touch upon the Rangers issue with the CM but met him only briefly at the airport and left the provincial capital without formal discussion on the matter.

  1. After so much of howling by PPP leaders of all sorts and throwing threats at the Central Government, sense has prevailed. They have no choice other than let Rangers continue Operation in Karachi (and/or beyond) because the Provincial Government and their pet-Sind Police had totally failed to control the situation. All know how the situation was. The city was completely hostage to an ethnic party who was killing a dozen people daily, torching factories, shutting the city within minutes and inflicting a loss of billions of Rupees to the economy of the country. What could else be done ? What will the remote-controlled CM Sind face back home, is to be seen because those who are against the Ranger's actions, may not be feeling easy.
