Teachers, students and journalists on Monday staged a demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club calling for arrest of murderer(s) of Prof Waheedur Rehman popularly known as Yasir Rizwi, and compensation to his family.
The protestors, senior journalists, teachers and students of the University of Karachi and Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, who were carrying placards and banners, chanted slogans against the Sindh government’s callous attitude towards dispensation of justice.
Addressing the protesters, newly-elected Karachi Press Club General Secretary AH Khanzada said that the killing of Dr Yasir Rizvi following the murder of another teacher, Prof Shakil Auj, showed the provincial government’s callousness towards security of teachers.
He lamented that nine months after the murder neither the killers were arrested nor the victim’s family paid compensation as promised by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah. He warned the government that the circle of this protest would be enlarged if the issue of compensation and killers’ arrest was not taken care of.
Another senior journalist, Maqsood Yousufi said the government had completely failed to ensure justice which was its primary responsibility.
Prof Tauseef Ahmed, a colleague of late Yasir Rizvi, deplored that the Sindh government had made promises with the family of Rizvi, but did not keep them. He said the teachers and student only wanted provision of justice by the authorities. He said this matter was directly connected with the teachers and students so their protest movement would continue till their demands were met.
