Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Monday urged the government to divert money that it is spending on bus projects to the health and education sectors.
Addressing a rally as part of a by-election, which is being considered a contest between PTI’s Jahangir Khan Tareen and PML-N’s Siddique Baloch, he said that at least 10 million children were out of schools in Pakistan.
Khan accused the government of carrying out the economic murder of peasants, saying that though Nawaz Sharif announced a Rs 2.5 billion package for the area, he was in a bad habit of not keeping his word. He was of the opinion that the economic package for Lodhran would not help the ruling party win the by-election, as the people of the area were not ready to sell themselves.
“PML-N is an expert in carrying out pre-poll rigging, but we are also prepared to stop rigging. 21,000 fake votes were cast in the Lahore by-election in which PTI’s Aleem Khan was defeated at the hands of National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq,” he claimed.
He further stated that they were fighting a battle for New Pakistan and would not sit silently until elements involved in election rigging are not punished. He also called for a Rs 19 cut in the per litre price of diesel and vowed that he would not spare any unscrupulous elements after coming into power.
The PTI chairman also announced that he would launch a campaign against corruption and inflation in and outside the assemblies.
It is vital to mention here that an election tribunal in August had annulled the results of the 2013 General Election in NA-154, disqualifying PML-N’s Siddique Baloch for possessing fake academic credentials.
The tribunal’s detailed judgment said the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) on its direction had reported a failure to authenticate the thumb impressions of 179 voters in NA-154.
PML-N lawmaker Siddique Baloch, who had contested the 2013 polls as an independent candidate before joining the party, was de-seated following the tribunal verdict.
Baloch later approached the SC against the decision of the election tribunal terming him ‘ineligible’ to contest elections.
The SC in its final verdict on October 28 had ordered re-polling in NA-154 constituency (Lodhran), while suspending the tribunal verdict that declared Baloch ‘ineligible’ to contest elections.
