The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Monday asked the TV channels to support the National Action Plan in letter and spirit by denying space on their TV channels to elements defending terror groups or those attempting to divert state institutions’ attention from war on terror. A press statement stated that law will take its course against all violators without discrimination. The authority also issued notices to Royal TV, TV One, Aaj TV and Waqt News this week in this connection. According to the statement, the authority initiated punitive action against TV channels, separately, for hurling false allegations and passing highly personalised, abusive and derogatory remarks against individuals and for giving space to terror outfits threatening the state of Pakistan.Taking serious cognizance of the language being used on TV screens, the PEMRA has expressed its resolve to ensure that TV screens will not be used as a platform to churn hate, malaise and indecency against any individual, institution or state or telecast anything which viewers find offensive and harmful to their state, themselves, their children and society in general. The PEMRA has also requested all TV channels to adhere to the respect and dignity of individuals, institutions, Constitution of Pakistan and other laws of the land and to refrain from using indecent, abusive languages, false allegations, hate speeches or any other audio-visual material on their screens which incites violence or lawlessness. It is expected that TV channels will strictly adhere to professional journalistic standards envisaged in code of conduct implemented by the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
