Cylinder explosions claim several lives, injure many

Several members of a family sustained critical injuries in gas cylinder explosion, which took place in a PWD Housing Society in the wee hour of Sunday.

According to details, nine members of the family, most of them were children, were scorched when a gas cylinder exploded. Two are in critical condition. All of the injured were shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) burns centre.

Talking to Pakistan Today, a doctor in PIMS Burn Centre said that two of the patients are in critical condition, while the others are vitally stable and are under observation.

Maria, with 100 per cent body, and Mumtaz, with 30 per cent burns, has been shifted to the ICU, as they are in critical condition, he added.

He said that there was a serious accommodation issue, as the centre only has 20 beds. However, even then space was created on an emergency basis to provide them with the best possible treatment.

According to the details, the injured are indentified as Allah Rakhi, one year old with 12 per cent burns, Maria, an 11 year old with 100 per cent burns, Zunaira, an eight year old with eight per cent burns, Humaira, a five year old with 12 per cent burns, Bilal, a 10 year old with 10 per cent burns, Naveed, a nine year old with a sharp injury to the abdomen, Mumtaz, a 25 year old with 30 per cent burns, Javed, a 35 year old with 10 per cent burns, and 12 year old Ameen, who suffered 12 per cent burns.

Rescue sources said that the cylinder blast occurred due to gas leakage. When a family member lit a match to turn on the burner in the PWD, the explosion happened.

In another incident, as many as ten persons including a toddler were injured in gas cylinder explosion in a flat in Pakistan colony Islamabad.

Mohammad Imran, a relative of the victim family said that the gas explosion took place when one of the girls at home tried to put up a fire to cook food. The gas heater had been switched on since the night before. The gas explosion was so intense that the doors and windows of the house were also affected in the incident.

Four women, five males and a toddler were injured in the gas explosion incident. Rescue teams rushed the injured persons to the burn centre at PIMS.

ONE DEAD, EIGHT HURT IN MALAKAND

At least one person died and eight others were injured when a gas cylinder used for filling balloons exploded in Malakand.

Police said that a man filling helium gas in balloons and selling them to children in Thana Bazaar of Malakand Agency when the gas cylinder exploded, leaving one person dead and injuring eight others present on the scene.

The body and injured were shifted to Batkhela Hospital for medico-legal formalities where the condition of some was stated to be serious.

FOUR HURT IN SHORKOT

At least four people, including children, were wounded when a gas cylinder exploded here on Sunday.

Rescue sources said that gas cylinder installed by a chips seller in his pushcart went off with a big bang in Basti Ariyanwali of Shorkot. Resultantly, four people, including three children, were injured.

The injured were rushed Civil Hospital Shorkot where according to medics their condition was stable.
