Weird traditions

Pakistan is progressing with time but still there are many areas where people have extremely strange living style and traditions. You will find diverse cultures all around sometimes astonishing you what kind of people exist in 21st century. But they are around us, living in the same world, same country at the same time.

I met a person who himself witnessed a man selling his own daughter to another person in Balochistan. He bargained her for just 50,000 rupees as there was a defect in girl’s eyes.

Some areas around Skardu have this culture of “mutaa” in which a contract between young girl and boy is signed. They remain husband and wife for a fixed period, after which the girl has the option to leave that man and can sign the contract with any other man. In case they have children, they are raised by the man. They have no concept of cleanliness. They take a bath after months and use cow dung on their children’s bodies to keep them warm. They are so poor and backward that they haven’t seen a single city in their entire lives.

Coming towards Sindh and Punjab, there are family rivalries since decades which results in murders. Even worse, some areas of central Punjab are famous for killing a man first and then finding out what his crime was.

It is shocking that we live in a place where people don’t even know their own basic rights. They don’t have the slightest idea as to what our religion teaches us. Most of our population lives in rural areas. It is really important to create awareness and educate them if we want to progress as a nation.
