Tribute paid to Neerja in upcoming biopic

Bollywood starlet Sonam Kapoor has tweeted the trailer of her upcoming film ‘Neerja’, the biopic paying tribute to the flight attendant who lost her life while saving many others on the ill-fated Pan Am flight 73 back in 1986.

The trailer launch, organised by the makers Fox Star Hindi and Bling, was also attended by Neeraj Bhanot’s brothers in Chandigarh.

The movie, directed by Ram Madhvani, has the versatile Shabana Azmi playing Rama Bhanot, mother to Neerja and Shekhar Ravjiani, playing Prem Bhanot, the flight attendant’s boyfriend.

Apart from thanking everyone who appreciated the idea and the trailer, Sonam shared a video of the flight attendant-cum-model, who actually was Neerja Bhanot.

Here are some of the reactions to the trailer and Sonam’s gushing replies.

Neerja, the flight attendant aboard the ill-fated Pan Am flight 73 lost her life just two days before her 23rd birthday when a terror group Abu Nidal hijacked the plane on September 5, 1986, upon landing in Karachi, Pakistan.

While the three-member American cockpit crew fled, Neerja took control of the situation and hid the passports of all Americans on board — opposing the hijackers’ demands.

After a 17-hour wait, when the terrorists opened fire, Neerja sacrificed her life while trying to shield the children from the bullets.

Her heroic act was internationally recognised and she was given several awards posthumously, including Tamgha-e-Insaaniyat. She became the youngest recipient of India’s Ashoka Chakra Award.
