Pakistan committed to eliminating terrorism, extremism: Abbasi

 

Deputy Speaker National Assembly Murtaza Javed Abbasi has said that Pakistan and United States are strategic partners with long history of cooperation in diverse fields. He said that Pakistan highly values its relations with US and desires to further consolidate existing relations.

He expressed these views while talking to Mr. Ian McCary, political counsellor of the embassy of United States of America who called on him in Parliament House, this morning.

The deputy speaker underlined the need for enhanced cooperation between the parliaments of both the countries. He viewed that the parliamentarians could play a significant role to promote better understanding and bring both the nations closer. He also stressed for a frequent people-to-people contact, which would further augment the existing relations between two countries. He appreciated US cooperation in the development of socio-economic sectors and said that US assistance in educational, social and development sectors are highly appreciable. He asked for US support to overcome energy constraints in Pakistan.

He said that both countries were allies in War against Terrorism and collaborating at every level to fight against this menace. Highlighting Pakistan’s sacrifices rendered during this battle, he said that terrorism has claimed more than 70,000 lives in Pakistan apart from huge economic losses and damage to infrastructure. He said that incumbent government is committed to eradicate terrorism and had launched Operation Zarb-e-Azab in 2014 which successfully entered into its final stage. He informed about strong legislative measures taken by the parliament including laws enacted for paced prosecution of terrorists. He said that Pakistan believes in having cordial relations with neighbouring countries and resolution of disputes through peaceful means. He said that US could play a vital role for peace and stability in the region.

Ian McCary stated that US also considers Pakistan one of the most trusted allies and strategic partner in Asia. He said that US is collaborating with Pakistan in education, polio eradication, health sector and women empowerment. He said that US strongly support democratic process in Pakistan and appreciated recently held local body elections across the country. He said that US highly acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in War against Terrorism and assured all out support to eradicate this menace from the country.
