Former KDA man involved in China cutting, NAB tells SHC

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Friday informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) that former Karachi Development Authority (KDA) director Abdul Qavi Khan grabbed the land allotted for Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) and built an illegal apartment building on it.

The SHC bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, was hearing the petition filed by Qavi Khan, who is currently in NAB’s custody. The petitioner maintained that he was being harassed by the Bureau in a land scam case.

In Friday’s hearing, NAB filed its reply, stating that the inquiry against the former KDA director was initiated upon Rangers’ report relating to china-cutting and land grabbing.

According to the NAB, a project namely “University Hill Villas” had been illegally established on 13 plots, measuring 247 square yards, originally allocated for a water conduit and high tension lines of K-Electric. “After building the project, Qavi Khan sold the plots and received funds in his personal accounts and made himself the beneficiary,” NAB told SHC.

NAB’s report went on to say that the former KDA officer had caused a huge loss to the national exchequer and was, therefore, not entitled to any discount and his plea should be rejected.

Earlier, the petitioner submitted that he was issued a notice by NAB on November 18, and arrested on November 26, after his arrest warrant was issued by the NAB. He submitted that he had nothing to do with any corruption or embezzlement and that he was suffering from several diseases and was a chronic diabetes patient.
