Army doesn’t put its nose in govt affairs: Defence Minister

Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Thursday said there is no undue interference from the Pakistan Army in matters of governance, a local TV channel reported.

In an interview with a British media outlet, Asif said that the government respects all institutions, whether judiciary, media or the army. All institutions are playing their roles in achieving national targets.

He said that the impression that there was military interference in governance related matters was ‘baseless’, and added that those making such claims should see today in the context of what happened in the past.

The defence minister said there is no rivalry with anyone, and no tussle for power and authority. He said such rumours would die after another transfer of power from one civilian government to another.

Khawaja Asif said that the government respects all institutions. He that it was not a question of what departments are contributing more, adding that the real question is what is being achieved together.

He said we shouldn’t focus on what the officials are wearing i.e. whether they are in uniform or wearing civilian clothes, but what they are doing.
