Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday held a one-on-one meeting with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif, the agenda of which the PM House refused to disclose.
“Though the PM House confirmed the meeting between the two authorities, it did not divulge the agenda of the meeting,” sources said.
Earlier last month, General Raheel used a corps commanders’ meeting to call for taking ‘governance initiatives’ in order to complement efforts of the security forces in the fight against terrorism.
Civil and military authorities appeared to be at odds over the slow pace of implementation on a new national plan introduced to effectively deal with the threat of terrorism and extremism.
Further, sources said that PM Nawaz may also share with Gen Raheel details about his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Army chief is also likely to discuss in detail with the premier his recent visit to the United States, sources added.
However, sources maintained that, “Military leadership has reservations over PM Nawaz’s stance on the ongoing Karachi operation as he fully stands with Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and the Sindh government, rather than giving a political go-ahead to law enforcement agencies to address Karachi’s law and order situation.
