Fog related accidents claim eight lives in Punjab

At least eight people were killed and several others injured in separate fog related road accidents in various cities ofPunjab on Tuesday.

Dense fog covered several cities of Punjab, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Muridke, Okara and Sahiwal, on night between Monday and Tuesday, causing problem in the flow of traffic on Motorway and other highways.

 

According to police, the first road accident took place at Sheikhupura Road in Faisalabad where due to poor visibility caused by foggy weather a wagon and passenger bus collided head on resulting in death of two people on the spot and leaving three others seriously wounded.

 

In collision between a school van and a truck near 33 Railway Crossing in Sargodha, driver died and eight students were injured.

 

At Lahore Road in Sheikhupura due to fog a truck rammed motorcycle killing the motorcyclist on the spot.

 

A woman died and 18 others were wounded in collision between passenger bus and truck near Sakheki area in Pindi Bhattian. At Noor Shah Road in Sahiwal a tractor trolley crushed to death a teenage girl. One person was dead and few others wounded when trailer hit a private car at Bypass Chowk in Chichawatni.

 

The bodies and injured of all accidents were shifted to different hospitals of concerned areas where according to medics condition of some wounded people was serious and it was feared that death toll could rise further.

 

The Motorway police have appealed the drivers to use GT Road for travel from Lahore to Pindi Bhattian. They have also urged the drivers to drive slowly and switch on fog lights. They also requested people to stay home and avoid unnecessary travelling.

 

A severe disruption in flight schedule at Lahore s Allama Iqbal International Airport was also seen as visibility was down to zero.

 

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the fog will continue engulfing parts of country till Friday in morning and evening.
