ECP tells SC that delimitation of constituencies in 9 districts of Sindh will be completed by December 5

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that delimitation of constituencies in 9 districts of Sindh would be completed by December 5 and that the schedule for holding of municipal election in these districts would be announced after the delimitation.

The two-member bench of Justice Dost Muhamamd and Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard the case against the order of Sindh High Court.

During the course of proceedings, the ECP joint secretary appeared with his counsel Munir Paracha and informed the court that the commission on the direction of SIndh High Court has started work on delimitation of constituencies in 81 Union Councils of nine districts of Sindh.

He said that the task could have been completed earlier but that it was delayed due to issuance of election schedule. He said that the delimitation work would be completed by December 5, and that a notification would be issued in this regard. The court directed the ECP to implement Sindh High Court orders.

Earlier, Sindh High Court had ordered the ECP to delimit 81 constituencies in 9 districts shortly before the second phase of the local government elections. ECP approached the SC seeking to reverse the Sindh High Court’s decision, but SC refused to provide relief to the ECP and with one day left in the second phase of the LG polls, asked the Commission to delimit constituencies within 24 hours and to hold elections in the constituencies in question. But instead of obeying the order, the ECP simply postponed the elections in these union councils. ECP has now informed the SC that the delimitation would be completed by December 5 and schedule for elections would be announced some time after that.

During proceedings, Wasim Sajjad also appeared before the bench and pleaded that his two clients Sahaid Ali and Noor Muhamamd wanted to become party in the case. The bench accepted his plea and allowed them to become party in the case. The court also issued notices to them for the next hearing.

Later, hearing of the case was adjourned for an indefinite period.
