Parents of newborns or young babies will often find themselves listening to the shrill sounds of a screaming infant. Whether they’re hungry, tired or in need of a nappy change, they always find a way to let you know.

And while many have perfected their own ways of settling their little one, they don’t always work the way you want them to – and especially not in the middle of the night.

One doctor claims to have found a foolproof method to instantly calm babies who are upset with a simple ‘hold’ technique.

In a video on his YouTube channel, paediatrician Dr Bob Hamilton explains that in his line of work he often has to talk to parents over screaming babies.

The doctor, who is based in California, has perfected ‘The Hold’ over the course of his career – a trick he demonstrates in the video in a bid to help mums and dads who are struggling to stop their little ones crying.

Folding baby’s arms across his chest, Dr Hamilton holds them face down on his left hand at a 45 degree angle and holds the bottom with his right hand before gently rocking and ‘stirring’ in circles.

The technique certainly seems to work, putting an end to the screams of two different tots and restoring calm instantly.
