The Sindh High Court (SHC) Tuesday upheld its decision to charge-sheet Inspector General Police (IGP) Ghulam Haider Jamali in a contempt of court case but deferred the hearing for 15 days.
Jamali and 11 other police officers were due to be indicted on Tuesday for allowing masked policemen to attack disgruntled PPP leader Zulfiqar Mirza’s convoy at premises of SHC and the adjoining anti-terrorism court last year.
During the hearing, IG’s counsel Farooq H Naik filed a fresh unconditional apology to a two-member SHC bench led by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, however, the court turned it down. Naek and other lawyers of police officers appealed the bench to consider IG’s apology.
However, the bench observed that the matter of besieging the court could not be ignored “since it’s not someone’s personal issue but a matter of honour of institutions.”
“The high court remained besieged for two hours but officers kept sleeping. The provincial government’s report in this regard is an attempt to hoodwink the court,” Justice Sajjad Ali Shah said in his remarks. He observed that Sindh police officers were given opportunity time and again but no action was taken. The bench later adjourned the contempt of court case till December 15.
