The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday restrained the acting vice-chancellor (VC) of Federal Urdu University of Arts Science & Technology (FUUAST), Professor Suleman D Muhammad, from making appointments and transfers till 1st December.
The SHC bench was hearing the petition filed by Engineer Farhan Ahmed who took FUUAST acting VC Suleman D Muhammad and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to the court, seeking the courts direction to restrain Prof Suleman from making administrative decisions as well as fresh appointments and transfers.
On Thursday’s hearing, the lawyer from acting VC and FUUAST, Bashir Ahmed, requested the court to give him some time for filling counter-affidavit. The court while accepting his request adjourned hearing of the petition till 1st of December.
The court directed Prof Suleman to perform his routine work and day-to-day affairs of the varsity but he was restrained from making major decisions till the next date of hearing.
Earlier, the petitioner stated that Poof Sleman was appointed as acting VC of FUUAST but he could not make administrative decisions of the varsity. He stated that the acting VC had no authority to make decisions which were beyond day-to-day affairs. “The acting VC cannot make new appointments and transfer the employees,” the petitioner stated.
He further stated that under the relevant law there was no provision for appointing the acting VC. He pointed out a letter written by the HEC to Prof Suleman advising him to defer important policy decisions till the appointment of regular VC.
