The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday adjourned hearing of the court’s contempt case against 14 police officers of the province including Inspector General Police (IGP) Ghulam Haider Jamali and former additional IGP Ghulam Qadir Thebo till first week of December.

A SHC bench, headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, was hearing the petition filed by former home minister Zulfiqar Mirza seeking court’s contempt proceeding against top policemen of the province for besieging SHC and beating his guards and journalists on 23rd May 2015.

On Wednesday’s hearing, police officers once again submitted unconditional apology to the court. The advocate general (AG) stated that the government wanted to take action against the responsible. He said currently the police were busy in targeted operation and security measures for the upcoming local government elections. “The moral of the police officers and personnel would fall after the indictment of top police officials,” the AG stated.

After the arguments, the court adjourned the hearing of the case till first week of December. The contempt of court’s proceeding was initiated against the police officers when the armed masked personnel had besieged the SHC during Dr Mirza’s presence in an apparent bid to arrest him. The personnel had subjected the private guards of Dr Mirza and several media persons to torture at the main gate of SHC on 23rd May this year. The personnel had also smashed parked vehicles and cameras from journalist.

According to the court’s earlier order, IGP Ghulam Haider Jamali, then Additional IGP Karachi, Ghulam Qadir Thebo, SSP captain retired Muhammad Asad, Incharge Special Investigation Unit Major retired Saleem and other top police officers had submitted unconditional apology which were rejected by the court.
