More than 150 people, including children and women, fell unconscious when ammonia gas leaked in a cold storage facility in Badami Bagh area on the night between Monday and Tuesday. The facility was sealed by the administration after the incident.
According to sources, the ammonia gas leaked after a cylinder exploded at the warehouse of the cold storage, and soon engulfed the entire area.
Teams of rescuers and the City District Government Lahore reached the area and controlled the leakage of the gas. Nearly 150 unconscious people were taken to the Mayo and Ganga Ram hospitals for treatment, according to rescuers.
After the incident, residents of the area staged a protest against the cold storage facility.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken serious notice of the incident and called a report from the authorities concerned. He has also issued orders for provision of best possible treatment to the affected people. Also, the CM’s advisor, Khawaja Salman Rafique, visited the Mayo Hospital and enquired after the affected persons. Police have taken the owner of the facility into custody.
