Discretionary powers of President can be eliminated regarding the announcement of date of new general elections.

As per media reports, parliamentary penal about electoral reforms has suggested that discretionary powers of President of announcement of general elections should be withdrawn.

According to recommendations of penal, President of Pakistan would share its powers with Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and announce the date of general elections with its consultation.

“The constitution of the country says that new general elections should be held within the period of sixty days provided assemblies may dissolve before completing their tenure and if assemblies could complete their tenure, then new elections be held within 90 days”, reports says.

As per constitution, President of Pakistan announces the date of next elections and ECP announces its schedule according to the date. The parliamentary committee has started to prepare recommendations in this regard.
