Mirza’s group routs PPP in LG polls, consolidates hold over Badin

Disgruntled Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former home minister for Sindh, Dr Zulfiqar Mirza’s political group has delivered a shocking defeat to the Asif Zardari-led ruling provincial party in Badin, as unofficial preliminary results show Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Mirza’s group leading the poll count.

Unofficial results show Mirza’s group has won in 10 out of 14 wards of the municipal committee of Badin where elections were contested. The alliance emerged victorious in town committees of Tando Bago, Pangrio, Khoski, Nindo Shahar and Khoski town.

Talking to reporters, Mirza said that the loss in Badin was not PPP’s but of the “Zardari gang”, adding that PPP was still his party.

“It a tragedy that Bilawal came to Badin and I could not join him,” said Mirza while referring to Bilawal’s recent rally held in Badin in the run up to the LG polls. “Bilawal is misguided by his father,” he said, adding that he does not hold anything against the PPP chairman.

The polling for the formation of municipal corporation, municipal committees, town committees and union councils in the second leg of local government elections came to an end peacefully in all polling stations of 14 districts in Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah divisions on Thursday.
