Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has called for a coordinated global response against terrorism, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Thursday.
“Terrorism is a global threat,” the army chief was quoted as saying.
According to the military’s media wing, Gen Raheel, who is on an official tour in the United States met US Senate’s Armed Services Committee on Thursday.
“US senators acknowledged Pakistan Army’s efforts against terrorism, saying the army’s perseverance and commitment had degraded militants in the country’s north western region,” the ISPR statement said.
The committee assured Gen Raheel of US support and cooperation in eradicating terrorism and extremism from the country, saying Pakistan had successfully turned the tide of terrorism.
Earlier upon his arrival, the COAS was received by members of the US Senate’s Armed Services Committee, including Senator John McCain, Senator Jack Reed and other senior officials at Capitol Hill.
Senator McCain lauded the efforts, sacrifices and steadfastness of the Pakistan armed forces, especially the leadership of Gen Raheel, in fighting terrorists on both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
The army chief also highlighted the need for stepped up Pakistan, Afghanistan border management and sustained cooperation to deal with emerging threats.
