Russian marathon runner Viktor Ugarov is facing further sanction after winning a race in Japan while his country is suspended from IAAF competition.
Ugarov triumphed in Sunday’s Kanazawa Marathon, despite the fact Russian athletes were banned by the IAAF on Friday amid allegations of state-sponsored doping.
The IAAF later removed a listing that stated Ugarov’s winning time was a personal best, and have now warned the athlete that he is facing punishment.
“The athlete in question competed in error as they listed a regional affiliation of ARAF rather than ARAF,” an IAAF spokesperson said.
“The event organiser is disqualifying his record and no appearance or prize money will be paid.
“The IAAF is writing to ARAF today to convene disciplinary proceedings against the athlete.”
ARAF have also posted a warning to athletes and coaches warning that breaching the IAAF ban will result in sanctions.
“[ARAF] is urging you to pay your attention to the fact that Russian athletes ARE NOT ALLOWED to take part in the international competitions,”
“Russian athletes, coaches and athletes support personnel cannot take part in any international competition, including competitions of the World Athletics Series and Olympic Games until ARAF have been reinstated as an IAAF Member.
“Russian athletes may take part ONLY in local competitions organised in Russia.
“Athletes, found in violation of this ban and competing abroad, will be subjected to sanctions by ARAF.”
