LHC dismisses Chinese company’s plea for release of hides

The Lahore High Court Wednesday dismissed a petition filed by a Chinese company for release of 1,015 donkey hides.
Justice Erum Sajjad Gull heard the petition filed by Glu Bin Company, through a representative Yang Shang. The court had reserved verdict on the petition after hearing arguments of parties on November 17 and it was announced in open court on Wednesday.
Petitioner Ho Longbin, a representative of Globin had submitted that on September 6, Kasur police conducted raid at the tannery in area of Deen Garh and confiscated 1,015 hides and registered a case under section 270, 429 and 379 of PPC against three of company workers.
The petitioner counsel said that the Chinese people were trading animal hides from last 20 years from the local market of Kasur and the practice is continuing.
He said that the petitioner had nothing to do with the meat of donkeys and were using hides for tannery purposes. He said that the police in FIR had claimed that the hides belonged to some Pakistani men, which was incorrect. He also submitted that the hides were perishable item, which could not be preserved for an indefinite period, and it has already been two months passed and the hides could become useless.
Advocate Shoaib Saleem argued on behalf of two citizens Nisar Ahmad Seikhu and Muhammad Saeed and said that the petitioner was blackmailing the court in the name of investment in Pakistan. He contended that the buying of an illegal thing from the market cannot be legal and therefore, the petitioner cannot justify buying of donkeys’ hides and investment in this regard.
The counsel further argued that the petitioner had committed an illegal act despite that he had come from China to invest here because criminal is a criminal even if he had come from the heaven. The act of the petitioner will also lead to the heinous business of donkeys’ meat in the country, he told the court. He had prayed the court to order police to dumb the hides for larger public interest.
