Automobile production increases 53.8pc in two months

The automobile production witnessed increase of 53.8 percent during the first two months of the current fiscal year, compared to the corresponding period of last year.

The automobiles that contributed in the positive growth in the production included light commercial vehicles (LCVs), output of which grew by 156.12 percent, according to official data.

The data revealed that as many as 6,910 units of LCVs were manufactured during July-August (2015-16) compared to the production of 2,698 units in July-August (2014-15).

Similarly, the production of jeeps and cars increased from 18,417 units last year to 30,008 units during the current year, showing upward growth of 62.94 percent.

The production of motorcycles also witnessed positive growth of 14.27 percent by going up from the output of 280,673 units last year to 320,724 units this year while the production of trucks increased from 590 units last year to 749 units this year, showing growth of 26.95 percent.

The production of tractors increased from 5,266 units to 5,294 units, a growth of 0.52 percent while the production of buses increased by 62.50 percent, from 96 units to 156 units.

Meanwhile, on year-on-year basis, the production of automobiles during August 2015 increased by 51.8 percent compared to the production of August 2014. During the month of August, the production of LCVs increased by 166.48 percent from 1,441 units in August 2014 to 3,840 units while the production of jeeps and cars increased by 49.96 percent from 11,291 units in August 2014 to 16,932 units in August 2015.

The production of motorcycles increased from 140,545 units in August to 1,62,924 units in August 2015, an increase of 15.92 percent while the production of buses increased from 51 units to 94 units, showing growth of 84.31 percent. The production of trucks increased by 13.90 percent from 374 units to 426 units, however, the production of tractors during the month under review decreased by 19.69 percent by going down from 3,204 units to 2,573 units.

The country’s overall large scale manufacturing (LSM) registered positive growth of 4.71 percent during the first two months of the current fiscal year (2013-14) as compared to the corresponding month of last year. The Quantum Index Numbers (QIN) of LSM stood at 118.97 points during July-August 2015-16 against 114.28 points during July-August 1014-15.
