General Officer Commanding (GOC) Major-General Azhar Abbasi on Tuesday stressed the need for accelerating the pace of political initiatives in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, saying the government’s governance initiatives should match those of military’s to bring lasting peace to the tribal region.

Talking to a private television’s correspondent in Shawal, the army officer said although there was progress in the political prong in FATA, it needed to move at a faster pace.

Abbasi pointed to the sluggish political reforms, and argued that the army was not supposed to stay in FATA, nor was it supposed to give solution to every problem.

“The army has accomplished its mission by establishing the state writ in FATA, but in order to restore lasting peace quicker political reforms are needed,” he went on to say.

The major-general further said that the ultimate aim of the operation Zarb-e-Azb was peace, “but peace comes with people. It is not without people.”
