Punjab police’s efforts to control crime and arrest criminals have been exposed with the increasing crime rate in Punjab as police officers concerned sitting in Inspector General of Police office are reluctant to confirm the figure of 299, 890 crime incidents in the province during current year, Pakistan Today has learnt.
According to data received from police officers on the condition of anonymity, only 38,551 incidents of murder have been reported in Punjab during current year besides 7,000 incidents of cars and motorcycles theft and snatching in the province.
Around 3,484 murders, 4,013 life attempts, 10, 226 kidnappings, 2,017 rapes and 171 gang rapes occurred in Punjab which speaks volumes about performance of Punjab police.
According to the data, around 13,363 cases of robbery including 9950 of theft, 13,504 of stolen motorcycles, 3,856 of bike-snatching, 4,638 of animals and pets theft have been reported during current year.
According police sources, total 65,550 dacoity incidents took place in Punjab and people lost million of rupees in cash and police are still investigating most the cases and half of them have not been resolved.
IG Punjab’s director public relations Dr Nabeela was not available for comments despite repeated attempts by this scribe.
Police officers also said on the condition of anonymity that most of the proclaimed offenders (POs) involved in murder cases continue to murder people. They said police start to ignore the proclaimed offenders’ arrest when their record becomes old and their files are shelved by the police stations.
