Women MPs striving for women emancipation

The women parliamentarians focussed on working for women for giving them their due rights in terms of health, education, job opportunities and their empowerment, said Romina Khurshid Alam, a PML-N parliamentarian.

Talking to APP, she said “We have a high representation of women in our parliament comparatively to that of many developed countries and we are definitely focussing on women in making legislation to empower them in diverse fields.”

The MNA said that in terms of health, women in Pakistan were more vulnerable to get health issues due to less awareness on nutrition value for them especially if they are mothers.

The PML(N) government was working to make legislation on nutrition value of women as it was the need of hour.

There was a dire need for creating awareness on women health issues through various programs and mainly the rural women to bring improvement in their health so that they could contribute to their duties in proper way, she said, adding that “We are working with South Asian Physicians Academy in this regard to launch some projects that could benefit the health of women.”

Alongside health, the parliamentarians have also focussed on women education that is ultimately connected to their empowerment in terms of getting better jobs, exploring their leadership skills, highlighting their own issues and equal rights for them.

Romina said that National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) was also playing its due role in examining policies, programs and other measures taken by the government for women’s development and gender equality, review laws, rules and regulations affecting the status of women, monitor mechanisms and institutional procedures for redress of violations of women’s rights and individual grievances, encourage and sponsor research to generate information, analysis and studies relating to women and gender issues, develop and maintain interaction and dialogue with NGOs, experts and individuals in society at the national, regional and international level.

While Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) has its responsibility which is properly being fulfilled as the members are active to participate in any activity that brings women in mainstream, she said.
