Ambassador Tehmina Janjua, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, was elected as President of the Fifth Review Conference of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).
The unanimous decision was taken at the Annual Meeting of States Parties to the Convention held in Geneva from 12-13 November 2015.
The Convention and its five Protocols deal with prohibitions and restrictions of certain conventional weapons, balancing humanitarian concerns with their military utility. The Fifth Review Conference of the Convention will be held in December 2016 with a year long preparatory process. Review Conferences are held every five years to review the implementation of the Convention and its five Protocols as well as to explore the possibility of developing new Protocols.
The election reflects recognition by the international community of Pakistan’s contribution to international security and arms control related issues. It is also an endorsement of Pakistan’s strong credentials in multilateral diplomacy.
