A healthy breakfast should help blood sugar levels from getting too high and should keep you full through the morning. Whereas cereal and toast may be cheap, but these options raise blood sugar levels very quickly and may leave you hungry again before lunch. In breakfast, if you drink fruit juice, avoid taking juice or having a smaller glass of it as 150ml glass of orange juice without sugar contains around 15g of carbohydrate and 13g of sugar, Consultant Endocrinologist Dr. Tayyab Badshah advised masses and diabetic patients to adopt preventive measures to avoid serious health hazards, adding after every 10 seconds two people are diagnosed with diabetes.

He gave this piece of advice at a public awareness seminar organized by Shifa International Hospital to observe World Diabetes Day. A large number of patients with diabetes, doctors, medical students and the general public attended the seminar. Free blood glucose tests to check diabetes were also conducted. The theme of the day was “healthy living and diabetes” and this year, there is a focus on starting each day right by having a healthy breakfast.

Dr. Tayyab said that diabetes was a chronic disease and more than seven million people in Pakistan were suffering from diabetes. He said that gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that some women get during pregnancy. Around 18 percent expectant mothers develop this condition, making it one of the most common health problems of pregnancy. He said that it is a temporary disorder that usually disappears after child birth.

Dr. Usama Ishtiaq, Consultant Endocrinologist SIH, said 415 million people are living with diabetes, and half of the people who die from it are under the age of 60. The highest prevalence of diabetes is in Chinaand India. Pakistan is at the 10th position, with over 7 million diabetic patients between 20 to 79 years of age. He said, 86,000 children suffer from type-1 diabetes every year. He observed that diabetes can badly affect the eyes, brain, heart, kidneys and legs. It is also one of the major causes of blindness and kidney failure.

Dr. Usama discussed the symptoms of diabetes. He listed frequent urination, feeling of severe thirst, weight loss, fatigue and weakness. Balanced diet, regular exercise, weight control, regular medication and proper blood glucose level tests are a few essential factors that can help to control diabetes and avoid complications, he recommended.

Clinical Dietitian Ms. Zainab Ghayyur highlighted the importance of diet in treatment of diabetes.

Ms. Zainab emphasized the importance of including fibre in regular diet. She said, bran wheat, fruits and vegetables contain fibre that has virtually zero calories. Fibre is equally valuable for patients with cardiac diseases. Taking balanced diet, regular exercise, weight control, regular medication and proper blood glucose level tests are a few essential measures that can help to avoid diabetes, control it, and avoid complications, she recommended.
