CPEC in trouble? Opp walks out of Senate over route row

Opposition parties on Friday staged a walkout from the Senate to protest that their reservations over the China-Pakistan economic Corridor (CPEC) were not being addressed.

Chairman Raza Rabbani chaired the Senate session during which the opposition parties including PPP, PTI, BNP (Mengal) and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party lashed out at the federation regarding the implementation of CPEC.

The opposition parties stated that it’s unjust that the incumbent government is only focusing on one province.

The senators argued that unequal distribution among the provinces may cause negativity in the hearts of the people.

Senator Usman Kakkar stated that west route was completely neglected in the CPEC as not a single energy project has been installed on that route.

He said that the government’s irresponsible attitude has shown that the opposition was right about the economic corridor.

PPP’s Farhatullah Babar said that the matter should be investigated at the level it had been decided. Such decisions could not be expected to have been taken at the bureaucratic level, he added.

“This must be a political decision,” he said and demanded that a project of national importance should not be made controversial.

Moreover, the enraged opposition parties left the session.
