Justin Abdelkader signs seven-year extension with Red Wings

Justin Abdelkader could end his NHL career in Detroit.

The veteran forward has signed a seven-year contract extension with the Red Wings, the team announced Wednesday.

Although the financial details have not been disclosed, the extension is expected to be worth at least $4 million per season.

Abdelkader, 28, is in the last year of his contract, and would have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Selected by Detroit with the 42nd overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft, Abdelkader has 139 points career points in 413 total games. He has also appeared in 59 playoff games since 2009, posting five goals and 12 points.

Abdelkader has four goals and seven points in 15 games this season. He is coming off of a career season, during which he scored 23 goals and 44 points to shatter his previous career best of 28 points.
