The Lahore Canal will be made free of sewer inlets from Jallo to Harnabspura with the aim to keep the water free from hazardous pollutants.
Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Towns Municipal administration (TMA) and Irrigation Department launched the project to “purify” water and announced to complete work on removing sewer inlets by end of the current year.
Meanwhile, work is underway to construct new sewer lines along both sides of the Lahore Canal as alternate sewerage system to be provided to the housing colonies whose sewer inlets were being removed from the canal.
According to official sources, the Punjab government has given two installments for the project and the final amount would be provided soon to complete the work.
An amount of Rs 332 million has been allocated for this project which would be provided by the Punjab government to WASA.
Under this project, sewer lines would be laid down parallel on both sides of the canal and all the sewer connections of factories and housing colonies would be placed in the new sewerage system.
WASA would also install disposal stations to dispose off the sewer water to adjoining drains.
Sources in WASA said that before launching the construction work a detailed survey of the affected areas was conducted where sewer inlets were polluting canal water. The project would help improve the canal water quality, besides addressing long time sewerage problems of dozens of housing colonies along the canal.
