Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed on Tuesday apprised the Senate that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was the competent authority to grant extension in service to employees under the rules.

As many as 12 officers of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) were granted extension during the last five years, he said during the question-hour.

He said that some 351 officers in BS-17 to BS-22 are working in the ECP currently.

Responding to a question, Sheikh Aftab said the existing EC members were appointed for a period of five years with effect from June 13, 2011 and their tenure would complete on June 12, 2016.

He said 48 meetings of the ECP were held since appointment of the members.

However, he said, informal meetings of the Election Commissions were held daily to dispose of the cases including complaints received from the general public and political parties pertaining to electoral rolls, delimitation of constituencies, election petitions and bye-elections.

Besides, he said, the Commissions take up miscellaneous matters put on files from Election Wing, Local Government Elections Wing, Budget Wing, Administration Wing, Electoral Rolls Wing, IT Wing, Legal Wing, Research Wing, Training Wing, Gender Wing and all the four provincial election commissioners. “As the meetings are informal, these are not publicised,” the minister said.
