LB elections: Transporters decry police harassment

Private transporters Monday expressed concern over what they called illegal detention of their buses across Sindh by police for their use in the second phase of local bodies’ election campaign in Upper Sindh.
There are orders of SHC in CPNO: 1444/92 and CPNO: 154/93 that prohibits the government officials to detain any private vehicle without agreeing on fare charges with the bus owners but no one is following the court orders, said Sindh Bus Owners Associations’ President Meer Afzal, Vice President Rahmatullha Bhanejo and Vice Chairman Haji Muhammad Ramzan in joint statement issued on Monday.
Association’s President Meer Afzal asked when the Election Commission is issuing transport funds to all District Coordinators in Sindh for election campaign then why they are reluctant to pay them the due fare to bus owners.
Afzal said they are ready to provide hundreds of vehicles through proper channel if the officials contact their association. He showed concern that their bus drivers were being harassed by police if they refuse to go with them.
Transporters threatened protest till indefinite time across Sindh if their demands including payment of fare were not met soon.
