More than 500 buildings identified as unfit to live during Monsoon seasons still need to be repaired or demolished in nine towns of the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) and the Walled City Lahore Authority (WCLA).

CDGL following the instructions of the Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif started survey in nine constituent towns to locate dangerous buildings in view of the reports of damages due to the recent earthquake.

After the roof of a factory in Sundar Industrial Estate collapsed on Wednesday, district administration sought report from the town administrators regarding dangerous buildings with the aim to avoid any untoward incident in the coming days.

Sources said that 371 out of 500 dilapidated buildings were declared dangerous for living in the CDGL towns including 237 in WCLA.

Town Municipal Officer (TMO) Ravi Town Malik Abrar told the news agency that the WCLA had 9 wards within its jurisdiction where a total of 237 units were found to be dangerous.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson told the news agency that only 72 most dangerous buildings were declared unfit to live by the experts of Conservation Wing of WCLA. He added that WCLA demanded Rs 200 million from the Punjab government to conserve the buildings as no structure declared as heritage would be demolished. Punjab government has already released Rs 20 million for the project. WCLA teams have also started inspection of all such buildings to conserve them before any further damage.

Administration of towns following the SOP of the CDGL will issue notices to the owners of the dangerous buildings to vacate and demolish the buildings at their own expense to avoid any loss to the neighbouring people.
