Chief Minister of Punjab’s Advisor on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique on Wednesday termed the birth of a baby girl on the stairs of the Lady Willingdon Hospital a ‘shameful incident’.

In an interview, he admitted the mistake and urged the authorities to improve the situation of the government hospitals.

Khawaja Salman Rafique assured of investigation into the incident.

A day before, a woman gave birth to her child on the stairs of the Lady Willingdon Hospital in Sharaqpur area of Sheikhupura.

Reshma Bibi, a resident of Sharaqpur, gave birth after waiting outside Emergency Ward and Gynecology Ward of the hospital for two hours. To her despair, doctors paid her no heed, and she was forced to give birth to the child on the stairs.

After the incident got extensive media coverage, hospital authorities decided to admit the baby into the child nursery and the woman to a ward.

Last month, a baby girl died during birth in a rickshaw after the pregnant mother was denied admission in gynecology ward in Civil Hospital Gujranwala. After the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif summoned report from the concerned authorities but no action was reported against the hospital administration.
