Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld Lahore High Court (LHC) decision restricting the broadcast of Altaf Hussain’s pictures, speeches and political activities.

On September 07, the LHC issued orders restricting Pakistani television channels and newspapers from broadcasting or publishing speeches, statements, photos or activities of MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

The LHC also issued instructions to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) in this regard.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain challenged LHC decision in the SC. The appeal was filed by Hussain’s lawyer Asma Jahangir.

He appealed to the SC to declare LHC null and void as it violates freedom of expression, basic rights and the constitution.

According to local media, Additional Attorney General informed the court today that a similar appeal against ban on Altaf Hussain’s speeches was being heard in LHC.

On this, the apex court disposed of the appeal and transferred the matter to LHC, stating that latter would decide whether to uphold stay order in this regard or not.
