Shafqat Mahmood steps down from party position, says he’s responsible for PTI’s dismal perfomance in first phase of LG polls
Disappointed with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s dismal performance in the first phase of local government elections in Punjab and Sindh, cricketer-turned-politician and chief of the PTI, Imran Khan on Sunday summoned a report on the party’s defeat in the polls.
The chairman has asked all the districts chapters of PTI in Punjab to submit their respective reports on why the party failed to bag more seats and whether the administrative machinery was responsible for the party’s poor performance in the elections.
Besides this PTI chief has also questioned that to what extent decisions regarding party tickets were effective.
The party will have a detailed review of the results and reports and will later announce the next course of action.
According to Online news agency sources, PTI Punjab Organiser Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar has been given the task to collect evidence in Punjab and Arif Alvi has been tasked with collecting proofs of alleged irregularities in Sindh.
The sources said that evidences about irregularities will be presented to Imran Khan in a soon-to-be-convened meeting .
SHAFQAT STEPS DOWN:
Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shafqat Mehmood on Sunday stepped down from the post of party organiser in Lahore for what he called the party’s poor performance in the local government elections.
Mehmood posted a message on the social media saying “it is my moral duty to accept responsibility for this (party’s) poor performance”.
The PTI’s leader acknowledged that PTI performed much worse than expectations during the recently held local body polls in Lahore on October 31.
The party workers and organisers did their best but the best was not good enough, he maintained.
The first phase of local bodies elections was held on Saturday.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan People’s Party looked set to emerge as the leading groups in Punjab and Sindh respectively according to the unofficial results received so far.
Voters tried to make the most of a much-awaited opportunity to elect their representatives at the grassroots.
Although polling in most areas was by and large peaceful, Khairpur saw deadly violence when supporters of PPP and PML-F fought a gunbattle which claimed 11 lives.
