Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali on Friday took suo moto notice of the acquittal of former state minister Siddique Kanju’s son and four others in Zain Rauf murder case.

It was the CJP’s first suo moto notice since assuming office in September this year.

The chief justice ordered that the record of the case be produced for him.

“Record of the case in sealed envelope be produced before his lordship for his perusal,” the order said.

Mustufa Kanju, who had allegedly shot dead Zain Rauf, 17, in a drunken frenzy in April, was set free along with four other accused by Lahore’s an anti-terrorism court due to lack of evidence against him.

The witnesses, including the complainant, had retracted their statements and refused to identify the accused, Kanju’s counsel had told the court. He said that the prosecution did not have any evidence against the accused.

On April 1, Mustafa Kanju had allegedly opened fire on a vehicle near Lahore’s Cavalry Ground area, killing Zain and leaving a passerby injured after a fiery argument.

He said Zain was not the target of the fire, nor did he intend to kill Zain or anyone else.

Kanju was arrested after a case was registered against him under 7-ATA and Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
