Pakistan has lost its Asian seat of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) while Mongolia, Kirghizstan, UAE, Korea and the Philippines have been elected as members of UNHRC for the next 3 years.

Pakistan has been an elected member of UNHRC since the last three years. The tenure of 18 seats of the 47 members will expire on December 31.

Seven countries, including Pakistan, were contenders for the five seats of Asian countries which will fall vacant on December 31.

A 193-member United Nations (UN) General Assembly elects the members through voting.

Diplomatic sources at the UN were surprised by Pakistan losing against a highly non-functional Mongolia being taken as a member.
